It’s funny, I always thought that it would be easy to design myself a meaningful / innovative tattoo when the time came to get one. However, now that the time has come to decide what I want to do, I find myself as an artist, completely stumped.
Maybe if I jot down some things it will come naturally… might as well use Tumblr for something other than porn.
Some personal rules to getting a tattoo for myself:
1.It must be original and from myself.
I’ve always said, “When I get a tattoo, I will be the one who designs it.” I mean, it just comes with being an artist myself. Of course, there will be some collaboration with the tattooist as well, but still, the main concept will come from me. Mostly, I want my tattoo’s to be my own, I see a lot of repeated tattoos out there and I think it’s cheesy. (not trying to be a prude.)
2.The placement should work aesthetically.
I do know where I would like to get some specific tattoos, but I do not want to get them at this time because my step mom will be there. To extrapolate on that: I talked to this Canadian guy for a bit and he showed me a tattoo he got on his bum cheek. It was a red maple leaf from the Canadian flag. I thought it looked great. But, getting back on topic, I’ve thought of some places in advance: My hip bone, ether right or left side, (Yes everyone tells me it will hurt). Behind my ear. Maybe my wrist… ether way, my brain has turned off to this subject and I got to get it working again.
3.I don’t know how I’ll grow in the future as a person, but I would like to not regret my decision for a tattoo.
This is probably a big “Duh.” from anyone who reads this. Of course no one wants to regret their tattoo, but still, I wont be getting something like a cupcake or diamonds or skulls…or punch-rings.
4.I’d like to stay away from quotes or sayings.
Personally, these tattoos are a little cheesy for me. I’m not bashing anyone who likes them or has them, I just don’t care for them.
5.I would at least like my tattoo to mean something.
I know that all tattoos don’t necessarily need to have some sort of symbolic meaning to them, but for my first tattoo, I would like it to have some meaning.
6.I’d like to get something as big as a quarter, maybe a little bigger.
I’m not big on pain and I’ve been told that some tattoos really hurt while others don’t hurt at all. For my first, I should use it to “Dip my toes in the water.”
7.Definitely no tribal armbands or anything of the sort.
Let’s face it, they are really cliche. Plus I’m not really manly enough to sport one even if I did want one.
Well, now that I can visually see a guide line it is a little more easier to think about it. Along the lines though, here are some questions I’d like to ask myself:
1.Stylistically, what should it look like?
Do I want it to look more photographically realistic, or more stylized? Simple silhouette or lots of contour lines? Gestural?
2.What are some good colors / color combinations?
Bright colors? saturated colors? tinted or dim? solid colors? Or even have color at all?
3.Should I take an old sketch I like and tweak it, or start from scratch?
Pretty much states itself.
4.What will be the subject?
Humanoid? Animal? Furry thing? Object? Symbol?
5.Do I want it to be easily noticible or slightly hidden?
Got to think about getting a job, even if I believe that tattoo’s and piercings shouldn’t matter to an employer.
I will definitely go over this again and re-read it. It seems to get some things floating in my mind out on paper…well, tumblr.
